Do you have a legal or finance/fundraising background? Could you help us move our organisation forward in this exciting time?

What will you be doing?

Our newly-adopted strategy focuses on three main elements: Quality, Value, and Growth. We’re seeking a capable, motivated individual to join our Board of Trustees to help shape the strategic growth of the organisation and to complement the skills and experience of the existing Trustees.

We are particularly interested in applications from people with legal expertise, in particular relating to copyright, open data and contracts.

Interest and experience in family history would be beneficial, but not essential.

The key responsibilities of trustees are:
  • Ensure Free UK Genealogy is carrying out our purposes for the public benefit
  • Comply with Free UK Genealogy’s Constitution and the law
  • Act in Free UK Genealogy’s best interests
  • Manage Free UK Genealogy’s resources responsibly
  • Act with reasonable care and skill; and
  • Ensure Free UK Genealogy is accountable

What are we looking for?

The successful applicant will ideally have legal expertise the ability, time and flexibility to meet the commitments of the role.

The Board of Trustees meets every two months, mostly via video conferencing. In addition, there are seven board committees which typically meet monthly and we would be looking for the new trustees to be a member of at least one of these:

  • FreeREG Steering Committee
  • FreeCEN Steering Committee
  • FreeBMD Steering Committee
  • Technical Steering Committee
  • Finance Committee
  • Risk Committee
  • Fundraising Steering Group

Trustees are also often involved in work outside of the meetings mainly through email exchanges and assisting in their area of expertise

The role of Trustee is unpaid and Trustees are expected to take part in all meetings that they have committed to. Trustees are appointed for a term of three years. At the end of this term they may be reappointed for a maximum of two more terms. Details of the current trustees is set out on Our Trustees page.

What difference will you make?

We are in an exciting period of change, with a new strategy to take us to the end of the decade. Offering your support would have a wide-reaching impact on thousands of volunteers and family history researchers.
